Located in Chichester, Sussex, the Goodwood estate home of the Duke of Richmond turns back the clock each year to honor Britain’s glorious mechanical history. The Goodwood Revival first started in 1998 when Charles March (then merely the Earl of March) declared that racing would return to the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit for the first time since 1966. Back then, with racing speeds increasing the family was faced with a choice to modernize the circuit or discontinue racing: the latter was chosen, and things got very quiet for the next 30-odd years on the grand estate near Brighton. Nostalgia is a funny thing though, tugging at our emotions in times of turmoil and change…the simplicity of the past, at least as seen through memory, can provide both comfort and clarity to appreciate our ancestors’ achievements and maybe, even our own youthful indiscretions. When faced with relentless technological change and political turmoil, a little indulgence in nostalgic fantasy is very satisfying, especially when done in the manner of the Goodwood Revival.

So well done Lord Lawless !!! 😀👍👍
Love the vehicles that show up … don’t care for the blatant pretense one bloody bit ! Oh well … its amazing the older i get the less BS I’m willing to tolerate … and this … well … Goodwood is a bastion of BS at its very worst ( Brits doing pretentious ‘ costume party ‘ BS even better than we do ) … too bad Hunter S Thompson never paid the event a visit .. I can only imagine what he’d have to say about it … but trust me … it wouldn’t be the least bit complimentary … hee hee
But hey … Mr Lawless … nice article … good photos … but seriously mate … where the hell is a bit of yer prose or two to occupy our minds fer a bit … suffice it to say … I’m missing it …
😎
Been to Goodwood Revival twice and loved it. Like everything, word gets out and maybe a less appropriate mob shows up. Touring the paddock is a must, but to do that for two days forced the purchase of a “package” that included certain grandstand access and (really killer!) breakfast and lunch over two days. (I’m a fan of early race car drum brake backing plates and suspension components.) I got to get very close to the finest of racing cars in the pits but pretty sure all up I spent close to 2000 bucks on “tickets,” but I’d do it again…or maybe I should attend the less trampled event in France. Shhhh…..
Off to Barber Vintage, a place where the producers try pretty damned hard to help you have a good time. Goodwood could learn a thing or two about trams from the Barber folks.
So one can assume you’re a helluva lot more tolerant and accepting of blatant BS than I am ! Not much of a gourmet/foodie either …..ehh ?
Cause brother …. Hunter S Thompson’s ……..” The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved ” ……..fits Goodwood … Barber … Monterey etc etc .. et al .. ad nauseam ( emphasis on the nauseam ) to perfection … all of them being about pretense , pretend , nostalgia for profit .. and in general blatant BS .
But hey … to each his/her own … personally though I prefer to spend my money on the real … rather than pretense and Halloween for the Gentrified set .
I’l end on a lil hard earned GTRSLNGR wisdom ;
” Everything old is not good .. nor is everything new better .. the long lost art of discernment being the key to distinguishing between good and bad … better or worse … ”
Wised todays generation would do well to learn … but they won’t
