From 1967-78 Ducati was controlled by the Italian government. In a bid to increase sales, automotive stylist Giorgetto Giugiaro was hired in 1974 to re-style Ducati’s twins. Their engine cases were squared off to match Giugiaro’s signature “folder paper” bodywork, and the resulting 860 GT was absolutely on trend…for cars. Motorcyclists hated it, sales plummeted, and the 860 GT was re-styled for 1976 with a rounder tank. Today, the 860 GT’s uncompromising looks are treasured as period perfect.
