Daniel Defoe’s 1719 novel Robinson Crusoe, the story of a shipwrecked sailor’s adventures and travails, inspired the 1812 novel The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss, about a shipwrecked family learning to survive on an isolated island. The 1965 TV series Lost in Space was the interplanetary version of Wyss’ tale, and despite its campy tone, is fondly remembered for its excellent props. The context of the story is dystopian, with the Earth overcrowded and unsustainable, and colonists sent into space to ensure the future of humanity…in 1993. The 2018 reimagining of Lost in Space pushes the Earth’s sell-by date to 2046, with colonists sent to Alpha Centauri on a spacecraft that encounters trouble, sending colonists to parts unknown. Luckily, they have a very cool vehicle in which to explore.
