More than any other industrial designer, Luigi Colani (1928-2019) grasped the essential eroticism of the human-motorcycle relationship. While famous for his actually produced cameras, cars, and furniture, Colani’s work around motorcycles remains unique, exploring the curious fusion of machine and rider in design studies, sculptures, and several functional bikes. He was far ahead of his time in exploring radical aerodynamics for fuel efficiency as a response to the oil crisis of 1973 and always claimed his primary design inspiration was nature.
