Contravening all public health guidelines, the 2020 Sturgis Rally has proved to be exactly the Covid-19 ‘superspreader’ event that experts feared. An estimated 250,000 new cases between Aug. 2 – Sep. 2 2020 are directly linked to the rally, which is nearly 20% of the total new cases in the USA in that period, and the public health costs are estimated at $12.2 Billion. A recent study by IZA Institute of Labor Economics (click for a pdf) made the story abundantly clear: Sturgis this year was a bad idea, but the price tag in the aftermath dwarfs any economic benefit gained by local businesses or the South Dakota economy as a whole. But, local businesses and the state of South Dakota will not pay that price, as nearly all rally attendees were from out of state, and returned home to spread viral souvenirs.With as many as 500,000 riders attending this year, the Sturgis Rally was perhaps the largest mass gathering of any kind, anywhere on the planet, during the Covid-19 pandemic. The refusal of attendees to wear masks, coupled with close proximity in large crowds, was a recipe for disaster, and now the costs, physical and financial, are rolling in. ‘This is enough to have paid each of the estimated 462,182 rally attendees $26,553.64 not to attend,” noted the IZA paper.“The Contagion Externality of a Superspreading Event: The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and COVID-19” was released today, and picked up by numerous news outlets, from The Economist and Forbes to The Vintagent. The IZA Institute of Labor Economics is one of the most highly regarded economic research groups in the world, and is based in Bonn, Germany, and has over 1300 international research fellows and affiliates.
Sturgis 2020 was the worst PR disaster for motorcycling since ‘The Wild One’ of 1953.
Proof positive that ” Survival of the Smartest ” …. IS … a real thing .
Not to mention the fact that ;
” Science Does Not Care What You Think ! ” … nor how ‘ tough ‘ you’ve deluded yourself into ‘ thinking ‘ ( an oxymoron in this case ) you are .
And all bets are … we’ve only scratched the surface of the impact the stupidity of Sturgis 2020 will have on the spread of COVID-19
Sigh … welcome as I’ve said many times lately to ;
” The Volitional Collective Stupidity of America “
You might want to look into the (extremely poor) methods of the “research” that came to this ridiculous claim.
Phone movement and salary estimation?
Sounds as accurate as the IC models that said one million dead from Mad Cow (same modeling used to lock us down for this crap),
The reports are 1 death (who had a bad comorbidity) and a total of 260 cases. That’s a few decimal places away from the numbers spewed to gin up shock and horror.
260 vs 250,000.
That is NOT a rounding error.
They wonder why more and more people are ignoring “Experts”? This is why.
You might want to edit this to reflect how poorly they came to this invalid conclusion.
Actually, tracking cell phones is extremely accurate – and there were a little over 461,000 of them in the pockets of visitors to the area. While the total cost is an estimate, this is one of the most respected economic research groups in the world. Note Guitar Slinger’s response: his neighbor has already infected 4 people. Morbidity is down, but not for very vulnerable populations: ignoring the pandemic is sacrificing the weak and elderly in our society. Not everyone shares your agenda…or your news sources. The mistrust of ALL educated analysis is definitely a sign of the decay of community, and civilization. Cui bono? Give that a chew…
Proof positive that ;
” We are a part of nature … not the masters of it ” ( Zen saying )
… as an addendum on a personal note . A … errr …. how shall we say less than astute neighbor who’ve I’ve avoided since his return went to Sturgis … bringing the blight back with him ..and at last count infecting at least four other households in the neighborhood not wise enough to keep their distance
Sigh ..
Hey Paul, I just wanted to give you a Medal of Honor and CBO for your article on Sturgis. I hope you survive it! Get ready for the splurge, or maybe those guys don’t read! Very interesting, I think this news needs to be put out there.

I live in New Zealand. MAGA devotees can conjecture all they like about the effects of Sturgis, but here we’ve had 26 deaths total due to the opposite – a thorough lockdown decreed by an unfragmented national system. Commie Socialism? We look on the ‘Land of the Free’ with amazement, and without masks. We’ll done Paul
