It’s the original ‘who is she?’ scenario; a hot blonde on a motorcycle wearing a tight sweater over a bullet bra and turned-up dungarees. Specifically, she’s riding a 1947 Velocette MAC bob-job, photographed while cruising through Griffith Park. Photographer Loomis Dean’s unpublished ‘LA motorcycle women’ photo series from 1949 is Insta-famous, but little effort has been made to discover the back story on the ladies. Luckily, their identity is now known, as the women were photographed riding (and even racing) at other times and places. There might be a sexist assumption that Betty Drafton and the other lady riders pictured in 1949 are riding ‘their boyfriend’s bikes’, but the LA ladies captured by Dean were rough riders indeed, who competed – as they could – in off-road competitions, and knew their way around a motorcycle.

Now there’s a Velocrap ( sorry PdO but I know all too well what a pile Veloso are ) I can almost get my head around …. not cause its hers ( though that certainly doesn’t hurt ) .. but because it is by far the only genuinely cool Velo I’ve ever seen .
So yeah PdO … why not pull one of yours aside and make something genuinely cool and functional out of it ? To be honest … it’d be foolish not to
But back to the main story Mz Drafton … somebody .. somewhere must have more information on her .. like did she build the bike ( I wouldn’t doubt it ) what all did she do on a M/C etc
And finally .. any idiot who doubts a women’s ability to ride … needs to hear my story about that slip of a 14 year old BeesWing .. who taught me how to ride … including on the Wall of Death
BTW .. great story … great photo catches .. keep more like this a coming
😎
I know you have a ‘thing’ against Velocettes, but the fact remains they’re the ONLY British motorcycle to do 100mph for 24 hours, with the only vintage motorcycle owners club to do annual 1000-mile rallies, for 45 years now. Maybe you encountered a neglected one; any bike with a bad magneto or worn carb is a hateful thing.
Hey … what can I say … PDVS at its finest . ( post decision validation syndrome )
Cause I mean really … the ONLY Brit bike to do 100mph fer 24 hours ? I find that difficult to believe on the best of days .
As far as reliability … had a local friend with a shop that specialized in Brit bikes a couple decades ago .. …maybe you even knew or met him .. according to him … Snortin Nortons and Veloshits ( as he called them ) were the worst of the worst when it came to Brit bikes … which in light of the horrendously bad reliability of ALL British iron … two wheels and four … is pretty much saying something … ahhh .. the nightmare of Lucas Prince of Darkness electronics .. those hideous excuses for carbs ( regardless of the brand ) and brakes that sit up and laugh when you try to use them .
And yeah .. a 1000 mile rally ? with how many support vehicles .. spare parts vans and on site mechanics ?
Nope ole bean … thats an argument with me yer never gonna win .. mainly cause … the facts is against ya !
But thats OK .. I still likes ya !
NOW … about that Velo Bobber thingy ! Seriously ole bean .. y’all needs a CUSTOM bobber in yer stable built to yer wants and needs ….. paint up a new/old leather jacket or vest .. slap on the jeans and engineers boots … and ride like you want the wheels to fall off… but err … first dump the ancient history ignition system ( which never worked to being with ) upgrade them brakes ( either better drums or go full bore into discs ) modify the suspension ( such as it is ).. maybe give the bike a tasty paint job as well .. ( I’d stick with pinstripes though maybe pinstriped flames would work ) …. and has yerself a bloody goram ball … cause I know that you know that I know … that you will … to the nth degree
😎
Toodles … and please .. if ya does build it … show it off here !
I like you too, but you trippin’. Yes, the ONLY British motorcycle ever to do 100mph for 24 hours. Matchless managed 1 hour at 100mph at MIRA, and boasted mightily, while Velocette owners laughed at them. A Vincent under the supervision/prep of Phil Irving managed 11 hours before their big end collapsed, at Montlhéry. BMW followed up Velocette’s successful 1961 record on an R69S. Honda followed that a few years later with a CB450. But, Velocette retains the record for the only single-cylinder bike to do 100mph for 24 hours. Facts.
I already have an original paint/condition 1940s bob-job in my stable: a 1946 Standard OHC 500 originally owned/modified by Bud Ekins. A pukka as it gets. Check it out here.
Ahh … ya forgot to include some pertinent info there ole bean … as in ‘ single cylinder ‘ Facts ole bean facts … all the relevant facts .. lest yer claims be somewhat … err … irrelevant .( oh damn .. that law background making its ugly appearance )
As for that sad neglected excuse of a M/C ? Nahhh …. thats too rust bucket , barely a survivor ( rust the only thing holding it together ) and hardly much of a ‘ bobber ‘
More like a sadly abused uncared for corpse in my opinion . Now don’t get me wrong … I get the historical connection .. and why you might chose to keep it that way ( IMO though thats an insult to Mr Elkins .. e.g BLEEP patina … bring it back to life as originally intended )
But ahh …. what I’m talking about is taking say .. a parts bike Velo in your stable … and turning it into a genuine shiny side up resto mod custom bobber … thats fits the PdO image … that you can actually ride .. for miles on end .. either built by yourself ( best ) .. or someone else ( no shame in that ) to your specs and desires ..
I mean come on PdO .. you got an arts background … ya can’t tell me you aint got a streak of genuine CREATIVITY hiding somehow down deep just dying to get out .. so here’s yer chance when it comes to motorcycles …. build ( or have built ) yerself a badass lil Velo bobber … … then puts it up here .. and on a t-shirt .. and ride the hell outta the thing … remembering Big Sid’s famous adage
” Stock is a Can of Beans on a Shelf ”
From a man who knew all about making classics into RIDERS .. ( Ducait clutches etc in Vincents to make em runners ) not museum pieces .. damn i miss that ole man ..
Anyhoo .. toodles mate … see ya on the flip side ..
T aka – Kafka on the High Plains .. aka .. Have Cane will Hobble
9-)
And ahh .. a little wisdom the wife and I picked up from our three year sentence ( and it was a sentence ) in Purgatory ( our term for Vermont.. though hell comes awfully damn close … pun intended )
Everything old is NOT GOOD
But everything new is not always better either
Discernment , Wisdom , not trying to recreate or relive the past … and the ability to see things for what they really are being the key …
Ahhh .. REALITY 101 … not for the weak of heart nor mind
Wink wink
So WHY A PdO CUSTOM VELO BOBBER ?
Yeah … what is my [ bleeping ] obsession with the idea ?
To keep it simple ( yeah right .. I can hear the laughter from here )
Over the years YOU .. Paul d’Orleans … have contributed a massive amount of articles on the subject of custom motorcycles – one of the best books on Choppers available ( though sadly no longer ) – curated a multitude of custom bike events and museum showings – contributed to a plethora of other’s books on custom bikes – not to mention when there were still such things … a stack of magazine articles on the subject .. etc .. etc … et al
Yet… you have never contributed one single custom of your own to the genre … be it self built or commissioned .
And in my never ever humble opinion .. its about damn time you did .. leaving something substantial as part of your ongoing legacy .
And a Velo Bobber ? Hell … could any other choice be more appropriate for the Velo loving PdO ?
Nope !
And the best part is … the moniker for the finished bike is so damn obvious it almost hurts
The Velo d’Orleans … splashed right on the tank … in classic Velo script …
I mean .. come on Paul ole bean … if this were any more obvious it’d smack you in the face .. beat you over the head five times sideways … then pin you to the ground till you finally said Uncle .
Sheesh !
😎
( FYI .. in regards to yer trippin comment .. no insult taken .. but .. the last time I ‘ tripped ‘ was when I got ” Owsleyed ” while working sound at a G-D show …. ” What a Long Strange Trip .. ” ahhh .. err … it still is … and getting stranger by the moment )
You call that a bullet bra?Unlike the above example, bullet bras
pro-TRUUUDE!
They can knock an eye out if you’re not careful
Like you’d even have a clue .
Suffice it to say .. with each and every comment .. just as one might assume you’d finally hit rock bottom … you prove yourself to be an even bigger fool by the keystroke…
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the linked picture of the swell ex-Ekins bike. got to ask though, do ANY parts on that bike that actually move?
Best,
-Danny
Ha! The Standard runs! I first saw it in the late 1980s at a sidecar rally in Griffith Park, by coincidence, in the possession of its former owner Homer Knapp, who bought it from Bud Ekins when he was still in high school. John Pera and Jay Leno recovered bikes that were stolen from Homer’s garage after he died, which is how I bought it – from Jay’s warehouse. I was amazed it was the same bike I’d seen 40 years prior, and while it had oxidized, it was free mechanically. I started a deep clean last year, and will revisit the bike this summer to get her going properly. It’s a very cool and rare bike with a crazy history. Standards were the first ‘big bikes’ sold out of Germany after the war, as the owner of the factory had shut it down rather than supply anything for the Nazis. When the war ended, he was allowed to assemble and sell his prewar stock, so this is basically a 1938 model, sold new in 1946.
yours, Paul
I still say … pay homage to the bike and its original owner … RENOVATE the damn thing if not completely restore it to Elkin’s specs
As far a running though ? That pile of rust ? That ole bean … I’d have to see to actually believe .. cause at the moment … I have some damn strong reasonable doubts that poor thing would so much as start .. never mind run !
I’ll be blunt as to my strong opinion on this .
Ya know the Midnight Rider …( my ole 65 Olds 442 w/455 under the hood etc etc ) and the Vinnie Davidson ( FXRP stripped customized and tricked out complete w./ custom looked like a Vincent tank created to resemble a Vincent Black Shadow .. hence Vinnie Davidson … in Vincent and H-D script I might add ) … that I built in the past ?
Ya know what massively PO’s me about both of them ? The idiot that bought the Midnight Rider .. despite my warnings that it was not a sports car .. totaled the damn thing three months after he bought it .. the only thing saving his stupid posterior being the full ( back in the day ) competition roll bar
The Vinnie Davidson ? Last I saw it .. like your Elkins rust bucket ..it had been abused misused and left out to rust … despite the damn fool that bought it paying godawful fortune for it … which is a helluva task here in CO
So take it from a creator …
NOTHING pisses off a creator more than someone leaving his or her creation out to rot and rust away like so much detritus ….
So yeah ole bean … from a CREATORS standpoint … excess patina etc .. is total BS .. and a criminal act .. not a positive to be paid even more for .. regardless of that that idiot on ‘ mericun Pickers” has to say
Guaranteed .. those dead and gone CREATORS are spinning in thriller graves over the blatant .. destruction of their creations
e.g. BLEEP Patina .. fix tha damn thing already ..
