The Vintagent Ads: The campaigns that sold us.
HONDA ELITE – LOU REED (1985)
Run Time: 1:00
Producer: Weiden & Kennedy for Honda
Director: Jim Riswold
Editor: Lawrence Bridges
Key Cast: Lou Reed
FILM MAKERS
Renowned, Independent owned advertising agency Wieden & Kennedy (W+K) was founded in 1982 by Dan Wieden and David Kennedy in Portland, Oregon. Famous for its creative work for clients like Nike and Old Spice and known for a “creatively driven” philosophy, it is today one of the largest independent agencies globally. But, back in 1984 it was a scrappy start up and when they heard Honda was looking for an agency to create a campaign for their scooters, W+K Jumped on it, assigning a newly hired Jim Riswold (who went on to be a legendary creative director and copywriter who revolutionized sports advertising) to pitch them. Riswold walked into the meeting with nothing but a tape cassette player. He set it down on the conference table and hit play. ‘Walk on the Wild Side‘ became the successful non-pitch to hire Lou Reed as a celebrity endorser, with the ironic tagline “Don’t settle for walking”.
SUMMARY
Shot in the LES of Manhattan, the shoot did not go well at all. A mess of under exposed footage led to the hiring of pioneer filmmaker Lawrence Bridges (of music video fame) who saved the day. His use of the rough, dirty footage, cut with creative new techniques made the spot which launched in 1985 a massive success and went on to heavily influence ads, music videos, Tv and film. The ad was followed by spots featuring Grace Jones, Adam Ant, and more. Stay tuned for those coming soon!

The irony … of Lou Reed … the undisputed epitome of NYC darkness , depression , deep counter culture etc … doing an ad for ….
” you meet the nicest people on a … Honda ” …
is for anyone familiar with both … almost hysterical verging on the absurd .
And for a Honda Scooter ?
Well … almost a little too much irony to handle … I mean really … Lou Reed ? On a scooter ?
Thats like Sonny Barger advertising an E-Bike or Moped …
Truth is … I’d forgotten all about this ad … and err .. is it any wonder why !
Eeeesh …yet another major fail from America’s idiotic out of touch Ad agencies
So err … thanks ??? for the memories ??? Hmmm … maybe not
😎
I bet that was the infamous 24hr Disco Donut near 14th st. and 2nd ave.Gross
And yes Bumpkin,it ran 24hrs
Nope Zippy … not Disco Donut ( sign is wrong ) … and yeah NYC wanna be … EVERYBODY knows DD WAS a 24 hour head there after the gig , night out etc joint . Oh … and didn’t Ai tell ya DD was on the big screen ( ” Taxi Driver ” ) at least once ? Damn yer Ai sucks ! … and gee …. I’ll bet it took you another 30 minutes of Ai BS to come up with this ” Momentary Lack of Reason ”
Give it up … crap &$!#& Ai versus actual NYC memories … Ai gets its virtual @$& kicked each and every time … as do you
Now try … just for once … to make an insightful comment … that remains on topic .. rather than trying to prove to all of us what you DON’T know … which we all know already … dipstick / dip$4!t !
But on the bumpkin bit … I’ve lived in NYC , LA . Seattle , Vancouver , Nice , Berlin , London and KCMO …. so who’s the bumpkin now … Antipode Boy !
Oh .. and BTW Splinky … DD was anything but infamous ( or gross ) … like Papaya Dog etc … it was a cultural mainstay and icon … but then again … if you were ever there … you’d know that !
Ya damn right I never was in Disco Donut, but I bet YOU used to haunt the place. And the Metropolitan theatre…and the Variety Photo Plays..ha ha
OK loudmouth, heres one for ya.At the worlds fair you could rent for the day a cart and driver to get around the fair in.These carts had musical horns(which drove everyone crazy)What tune did the horns play?
and go check out the old Members Only commercial on Ytube featuring Anthony Geary.See the resemblance between it and the Lou Reed commercial?Pure cheese.Plus Anthony Geary could pass for Richard Simmons with a Mullet.
“Members Only.Something happens when you put it on”
Hmmm …. been drinking the KoolAid again Splnky … cause ahh .. that AG MO ad you reference was shot entirely in a studio or on set … might even be Studio 54 … but nary a hint of DD
Oh damn .. that Ai kicked ya in the posterior again … not to mention another pre-adolescent response worthy of a ten year old
Here’s a hint … try looking at some ACTUAL photos of DD … rather than depending on yer cheap @$&ed &$!#%ed Ai
Ha ha you entirely missed the point of the comparison between the 2 commercials.I was pointing out the grossness of the two, nothing about Disco Donuts, which means the Members one struck you as normal.Hell, its probably safe to say your wardrobe has a lot of M.O. pieces in it.
Yeah well maybe if you communicated in actual English rather than pre – adolescent Twtterfacation ( in the words …. complete . relevant sentences rather than omitting the bunny trails floating around in your vacant skull ) someone might actually understand what BS is emitting from your minuscule little brain
But just to show what a complete imbecile you are …. the two ads have absolutely nothing in common .e.g. ;
Geary was a daytime soap opera star .. not to mention a fashionista to the hilt . advertising fashionista wear of the era .. in .. yup … confirmed it …. Studio 54 … THE place to be seen .. so yeah .. thats was perfectly normal for the time .
Whereas Lou Reed ….was a genuine badass …. walked everywhere cause he loved it … if on an M/C it was always on a H-D ( FXR;s for the most part ) or a Triumph … and was the furthest thing from Honda’s ‘ you meet the nicest people ‘ imaginable … and yeah short cakes … I knew the man .. spent a fair amount of time with him … not to mention got a head full of damn good advice about dealing with the music business and celebrity .. as well as dealing with gnats like yourself !
So like everything else .. your so called analogy … is total BS
As for MO … not a single piece … ever … None .. Nada .. Nunka .. Nyet ! Armani ( was sponsored by Giorgio ) for most gigs and a high class night out … hell for leather , t-shirts and denim the rest of the time ..
….and your shirt unbuttoned down to your pubes a la Bob Guccione- the better to display your manly chest hair
You truly are the very epitome of a clueless idiot living in a hell of your own making . Though perhaps a meaningless gnat [ as per LR ] suits you best . Waste of good air fits pretty good as well …
BTW genius … what part of your minuscule little brain does not comprehend the simple fact that t-shirts do not have buttons ?
