The Grossglockner Hillclimb was founded in August 1935, with the brilliant idea of timed races up a newly opened, spectacular pass up the eastern Austrian Alps. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road, had only opened one day prior to the first race, which featured both cars and motorcycles; while the motorcycle entries were light, it’s interesting to note the fastest motorcycle time (Martin Schneeweiss on an Austro-Omego JAP 600cc) was only two seconds slower than the fastest car – Carlo Pintacuda in a Scuderia Ferrari Alfa Romeo 8C.

Oh, the glory! A fantastic and magical motorcycle, fast as all getout and the raucous bang reverberated down the stone walls of the road banks. With the throttle twisted hard, she lunged forward with mountainous torque, and kept going faster. Nobody not nothing was getting in my way, the bike shot past every car and bike on that twisty road, mad quick and handling impeccably, even the very short bars didn’t slow cranking over into the turns. Bumps didn’t deflect the bike at all, it never got out of shape, even with a full handful of throttle while banked over in third gear. This was by far the fastest Vincent I’ve ever ridden, and the best handling, no comparison, somebody did something right on this baby, it’s pure magic, and we got along great. The ride up the gorge was even better of course, and the sound of that engine wound out in second and third gear made me want to keep going all day, up and down that little road, lack of plates and lights be damned.

But of course, I wasn’t in freewheeling California, and one of the race organizers greeted my return with a frown, as it seemed my 100mph antics were ‘endangering the whole event’; he gave Walo a talking to as well! Gee, I thought this was a race meeting, my bad. Strange that racers were flying up and down the gorge all day, but there was only one dressing-down… there is a deeper story here which I’ll reveal only if you buy me a beer…

So beautiful – the scenery, the machinery, the camaraderie! To say I wish I were there is an understatement. Thanks for making me smile and feel sorry for myself at the
Would you have some history on the Europeanized road racing Harley with the rear cylinder flipped intake/exhaust and the GP(?) carbs?

I second the request for the Harley’s history

You’ve outdone yourself with these last two posts, Paul.
Hard toi believe that you’ll be back in Ca in time for
the MotoMelee..
Hello,
I’m a regular reader of your blog. Your hill-climb posts are among the best I’ve seen. What a wonderful gathering of machines. Anyway, I decided that it’s better to ask fogiveness than permission at this point since the damage has already been done, so I’m asking forgiveness for using a couple of your shots on my blog. I was struck by the Harley at Grossglockner and had to write about it. If you would like them removed I’d be happy to do so. I’m fairly new to blogging, and have a practically non-existent following, but to get right with my conscience I’m writing now.
I’d say keep up the good work, but I don’t presume motivation from your readers is what keeps you doing it. Motorcycle alone motivate us enough, no?
Thanks for sharing your travels,
Jason Everts

This looks like something I’d dream about. Thanks so much for sharing all of your pictures.
Hmmm .. two repeat posts .. in one day ? That … doesn’t bode well for the future of motorcycling or this fine website … hmmm .
On the subject of hillclimbs though … its funny .. lately I’ve been binging automotive hillclimb events ( hill climb monsters via YouTube ) .. which I absolutely love [ reminds me a lot of Group B Rally ] but have yet to run across a single M/C video .. classic … contemporary .. or vintage like this event .
Begging the question … why ?
Are there no modern M/C hillclimbs ? ( and if so why not )
Are there no videos of vintage events like this ?
Are there no videos of classic events of the past ?
Begging the 2nd question … was M/C hillclimbing ever popular ?
( for reference in the 50’s 60’s automotive hillclimb was almost a popular as the F1 of the time … with the likes of Porsche , Ferrari etc going at it tooth and nail for the European championship .. building specialist hillclimb cars etc )
Ahhh … questions , questions , questions … and a bit of a concern … question is .. are there any answers ?
Hmmm ….. 😎
When TheVintagent.com was rebuilt in 2016, we had to kill the old Blogspot site. So literally hundreds of articles have to be manually re-posted as if they were new articles, which takes an hour or two EACH. So, I do it occasionally, just for the record.
Regarding hillclimbing: it was one of the most popular motorports in the USA in the 1930s, with tens of thousands witnessing the National Championship series, but these were actual hills in the American sense – vertical drag races. Hillclimbing in the European sense has never been popular for motorcycles in the USA, but there have been attempts. For example, there was a vintage series in Lake Tahoe in the 1990s, but insurance issues killed it.
Ahhh … ( the repeat posts ) good to hear good sir !
And yeah .. I know all about the dirt hillclimbs here in the US ..
..and the whole insurance issue … jeez .. how many events and venues has that whole debacle closed down due to us Yanks being unwilling to be responsible for ourselves in obviously potentially dangerous situations ??? TOO MANY !!!!
[ Not that I ever participated but I know skateboarding’s been taking a major hit lately due to … insurance concerns ]
I’m just surprised that I’ve yet to come across any pavement M/C hillclimbs in the EU … classic , vintage or otherwise .
I mean .. ya’d think motorcyclists would want to get in on that action … especially seeing as how pavement hillclimbing ( automotive ) is once again on the rise there .. with some of the craziest vehicles imaginable
.( like a Hayabusa or Ferrari V8 powered FIAT X1/9 not to mention seeing a Lambo … GTR… Porsche GT3S by the boatload .. Grp A & B rally specials .. and a whole host of insane mutants competing against each other on the same course … kind of like Bonneville goes road racing )
Hmm … seems to me someone across the pond is missing a potential opportunity .. not to mention a helluva lot of fun .. assuming yer mad enough !
BTW .. thanks for the response PdO .. putting my frazzled mind at ease
😎
Europe has the same insurance issues as the USA nowadays, plus special sauce from Green Party regulations, that are basically anti-everthing-fun. The Grossglockner, for instance, was shut down by a one-two punch from the above, after one more event in 2011. No mas.
Aaahhh …. WRONG … FAKE NEWS .. don’t know where you’s gettin yer info .. if that was the case … .. how’s come the EU’s is able to host one paved automotive ( insanity ) hillclimb after ‘nuther with an overall championship etc ?
Remember ole bean .. gots me plenty o’ family in EU ( Italy France & CH ) along with 1st hadn’t experience .. .. and yeah … depending on which country the Green Party can occasionally be a pain in the posterior … but insurance ? Hell … ever skied Chamonix ????
90% of the BLACK slopes are not groomed .. half the slopes there would never pass inspection anywhere in the US … and thats not even the most dangerous ( though damn near ) it resort in the EU !
So insurance ? Nope … in the EU CH … you do something high risk and fail … T.S.Elliot .. its all on you .. no litigation possible
( the sole exception being WING SUITING … which many resorts are banning … not due to insurance problems … but because too many innocents on the ground were getting hurt by wing suiters crashing into them )
BTW … a word to the wise …. NEVER .. EVER unless you know the person and know they’ll moderate their behavior … ever ever ever … Climb – Ski – Mt Bike – Road Bike .. or even worse motorcycle with anyone from Chamonix . Cham’s are risk takers beyond anything we think we do here … all bets are if you do … you won’t end up very well … got a good friend in Aspen who is a prime example .. some of the best in the world have ended up badly trying to stay with him …
Ahh Chamonix … where men are men… every man wants to be them … every woman wants to be with them … and .. the Cham women can kick the crap outta most of our men …
😎
Just repeating what event organizers in France and Austria have told me about the difficulties of keeping their motorcycle events going in the face of increasing restrictions. I have friends in Switzerland who organize a hillclimb (St Moritz), and with the support of the local municipality, and the fact that they bring thousands of people to a small town $$$, they can pull it off. Same in Germany with a supportive small town (Auerberg): things can happen with the support of local gov’t, but in some countries or locations, there’s a lot of resistance.
many thanks for your repost of this wonderful story! I really like it!
