SUMMARY

After Passion at Work, comes the second episode of Why I Ride, this time featured by Leslie and her bike, Francie. Growing up in a family of riders, it was natural that Leslie would have a “desire to get on the road.” As a designer living in New York, Leslie is always in search of a chance to get on the road.Despite the fact that riding’s often seen as a “masculine thing,” Leslie’s love of bikes and the freedom of the road have remained since childhood. “I just want to do things because they are worth doing,” she explains. Riding is her way to connect with herself, let go of insecurities, and rediscover what’s important in life. There’s something really, really romantic about the connection with your motorcycle …” Leslie’s Harley, Francie (named after her grandma) is the bike that changed her perspective on riding. Francie helps Leslie escape the pressures and responsibilities of the city and find “a place of happiness.“I’m the one making the road, drawing the map. See where the road takes.”

SUMMARY

"The first time I felt that tire hook up on asphalt ... whoa."

A short, inspirational documentary that seeks to encompass the spirit of motorcycle riding.

Matthew Work: Matt's love for motorcycles began while putting around in cornfields as a kid. Years later, while running a variety of tech start-ups (that he founded and eventually sold) through the 90s, he'd still find his mind drifting back to his ever-growing collection of bikes.

"I found myself between jobs and was just gonna find another software job and do my passion project later. Then I told myself, 'Screw later, let's do this now!'"

With that, Matt opened Piston & Chain, a motorcycle club in San Francisco. It was his goal to bring back a sense of community and establish a real place for fellow enthusiasts to talk about and work on all types of bikes. Members are given access to club facilities and weekly events and classes. Piston & Chain is open to the public throughout the week. If you're in San Francisco, go have a look for yourself!

SUMMARY

The mechanic that helped debut five of the most talented Italian motorcycle racers of the last 30 years meets the riders again. 3-times World Champion Loris Capirossi, 9-times World Champion Valentino Rossi, World Champion Andrea Dovizioso, European Champion Franco Morbidelli and European Champion Romano Fenati, who represent the past, the present and the future of hi-level motorcycle racing in Italy, remember their first experiences on a motorcycle with the mechanic that built them and supported the riders in their first races, when they were between 7 and 14 years-old. A former racer himself, Guido Mancini remained pretty unknown until this documentary, which highlights one of the most important figures of Italy’s third most popular sport. He taught the riders how to ride, gave them the proper bike and gear, working night and day in order to give to this sport what it mainly needs: brave, generous and charismatic riders who are able to push to the limit in every race. Original and never-seen-before footage and photos support the meetings between Mr. Mancini and the riders, who laugh and show their feelings in front of the camera, talking about a sport that does not only require talent, but also technical and financial support, without which no result could be achieved. Above all, though, there’s something that is shared by everybody that is deeply involved in motorcycle racing, a dangerous and epic discipline. That thing is ‘passion’, which is Mr. Mancini’s main quality.

FILM MAKERS

Beautifully directed and filmed through the lens of famed motorcycle lifestyle photographer, Michael Schmidt, and written by poet and journalist Kate O'Connor Morris, this widescreen cinematic experience is the first of its kind, and is recognized as the seminal "chopper" film of this generation. Narrated by actor Robert Patrick, he delivers the deep ominous voice of the bikers internal thought, the words we wish we could attain to describe our feelings for what it's like to be on an old chopper; racing through deserts and forest roads, salt flats, and two lane blacktops, camping on rain-soaked grounds, and emerging grease-stained from underneath your broken-down bike on the side of a road. 21 DAYS UNDER THE SKY is the one time the words EPIC and ADVENTURE can actually be used without the normal trappings of how these terms are tossed about in social media.

SUMMARY

21 DAYS UNDER THE SKY is an unconventional true story about those men who won't conform. Four guys meet in San Francisco to start a 3,800 mile ride down the Lincoln Highway – the oldest coast to coast route connecting the east to the west. They are riding vintage “choppers”; bikes prone to break down or run out of gas. Through the highs and lows of a long journey, this story examines the timeless American love affair with the motorcycle and an even greater American tradition: the road trip.

It's not a biker movie about crime, drugs, and women, though these are obvious byproducts of a life lived full. This is a side of motorcycle living that isn't often told. Their journey becomes less about getting anywhere and more about going back to where things started; about the vast heavenly landscapes, the proud people they encounter, and the small towns they rest in. It is a contemporary look at the American Dream, and the fearless few that have the guts to go without a plan. A reminder of what real adventure feels like.

Run Time: 9:46
Producer: Paul d'Orléans / The Vintagent
Director: David Martinez
Editor:  David Martinez
Cast: Richard Vincent

FILM MAKERS

David Martinez is a professional photographer and filmmaker, splitting his time between the San Francisco Bay area and San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.

SUMMARY

Richard Vincent raced motorcycles, surfed, sailed, karted, flew planes, and hotrodded around Santa Barbara from the late 1950s through 1967.   He did everything we love to do now, but 50 years ago, in the simple days of the ‘Endless Summer’ generation. Richard was also a photographer, using professional equipment to document his world.  He was also great friends with surf/film pioneer George Greenough, who shot 16mm films of Richard racing motorcycles, while Richard filmed George surfing, and both documented the scene around Santa Barbara in the 1960s. Richard was tall, athletic, handsome, and started winning races by 1965 on a very special Velocette racer he developed with Lou Branch.   But Richard was drafted in 1967, trained as an officer, and sent to the front lines in Vietnam, where he was badly wounded by an enemy rocket. After a year in hospital, his injuries meant he'd never race competitively again, and he moved to the remote Oregon coast, with his bikes, boards, and gear stored in a barn for 50 years.  Richard emerged, phoenix-like, in 2017, to show his photography and gear at the Wheels&Waves festival.

The Art Of Moto (2013)

Run Time: 1 hour and 29 minutes

Producer & Director: Mark Homan

FILM MAKERS

I was first exposed to motocross in 1973 at age 14 at a track called Motosports Park in Byron, IL. Back then the sport was new in our country so not much was known about it. Motocross quickly became my passion and much to my parent’s dismay, I started racing two years later. I made it to the 125 intermediate class with finishes consistently in the top thirty percent, before my racing days appeared to be over when money ran out and had to focus on my future. Most people I’ve talked to who don’t know the sport, have no idea of what really goes into it. This became the reason for the film-to give those who don’t know a lot about the sport an idea of what it is and what it feels like, while at the same time present a celebration to those who already do. After researching and talking about my idea, I committed to making the film and the journey began. - Mark Homan~Producer/Director

SUMMARY

THE ART OF MOTO is a documentary film that puts you inside the helmet of a professional motocross racer and on some of the gnarliest tracks in the world. Fly through the air and rip up the dirt with the fastest and most renown riders in the sport. Find out how the sport began, evolved and eventually came to America.

Roger DeCoster, Ricky Carmichael, Gary Jones, Ryan Dungey, Ashley Fiolek, Sara Price and many more will take you on a journey that can only be paralleled by actual racing. If you’re a rider, you will appreciate this celebration of the toughest sport on the planet. If you’ve never ridden in your life... sit back and enjoy the best perspective you can get without taking the risks these courageous racers face every time they are on the track.

SUMMARY

This is the story of an 87-year-old man, Stan Dibben, who won the World Sidecar Championships in 1953.

He was the ‘passenger’ riding on the sidecar, and he explains how the word ‘passenger’ is such a misnomer for the bravery and athleticism required to do such a skillful occupation.

We watch footage of his racing days, including the biggest race of the year at The Belgian Grand Prix in Spa in 1953, which he won by a wheel’s length to be crowned world champion. Also a story about joie-de-vivre, Stan gets back on a modern sidecar outfit at the ripe age of 87 and does a few laps to show he’s still got it.

THE BOUTONNIERE (2016)

Director: Paolo Asuncion
Writer: Paolo Asuncion
Producer: Erik Pascual

FILM MAKERS

Vargas Films is Paolo Asuncion (director, editor) and Rattler Productions is Luis Baptista, Frank Pascual, and Erik Pascual (producers). They have been making moto-centric films and documentaries for almost 10 years. It started with their fascination with motorcycles and the motorcycle culture and the desire to capture the events around them as sort of a video diary – something to watch and look back at when they got older. In many ways, this is still the case as evidenced by their web series – The Handsome Asians Motorcycle Club – where they feature builds, rides, and individuals in the motorcycle community and their stories about life on two wheels.

On a more personal note, there is one reason that Paolo likes to present these films in public. At the beginning of the films, the audience sees a quick montage of a certain person that fades and becomes a logo that says “Vargas Films.” Paolo’s dad was an actor in the Philippines, and his screen name was “Vic Vargas.” Paolo grew up on movie sets but he never really caught the film bug until after his dad passed away. Getting their films screened in theaters is Paolo’s way of putting his dad’s image and his name up on a big screen again. It’s an homage and a thank you, and a way of making Vic Vargas live forever.

SUMMARY

It’s been said that some motorcycles have souls, but how does a bike acquire its spirit? After watching countless moto movie cliches about how cool it is to be a biker or how badass a bike is (and producing their own stupid shit thereby contributing to the problem), the Handsome Asians Motorcycle Club put their heads together and decide to make a short film that focuses on an example of what it is that connects the biker to the bike.

MOTO BORGOTARO (2015)

Run Time: 7:45
The Filmmaker: Robert Serrini
The Mechanic: Peter Boggia
The Shop: Union Garage NYC

FILM MAKERS

Roberto Serrini studied writing, then photography, then editing to become a director. His style is a culmination of these tools, combined with the learned appreciation for communication that one acquires being a professional traveller. He loves the world, the people in it, and the stories that come from it.

His focus in on small stories with big emotions, advertising that gets you thinking, and films that get you feeling. He’s not interested in being like anyone else, but secretly loves emulating geniuses he works with.

He lives in New York when he’s not traveling for Get Lost Magazine and flying drones.

SUMMARY

Not only does Moto Borgotaro defy many of the stylistic conventions that have come to define “maker docs,” but it also sets a new standard for the genre of bike shop videos, which almost always feature grinder sparks shot in slow motion. The film accomplishes this by drawing heavily from cinema history to create an aesthetic reminiscent of a spaghetti westerns, grind-house, and Tarantino films. In the context of a short doc, however, these narrative stylings feel fresh and vibrant, and they definitely help Moto Borgotaro break the mold for what a piece like this can look and feel like.

STELVIO2STELVIO (2013)

Run Time: 3:26
Director: Andrea Livio
Editor: Andrea Livio
Key Cast: Andrea Livio

FILM MAKERS

Andrea Livio was born in Valtellina, Italy “thirtyish” years ago and spent most of his childhood as a competitive skier, finally deciding to pursue a life of film making after years of studying, working, and living in various parts of the world. In 2010 Andrea made the decision to leave everything behind for another adventure, naming his journey as his starting and finishing point: Stelvio2Stelvio.

SUMMARY

Depart from Stelvio Pass and return only after finishing an around the world journey.

I like to get lost. I don’t have a GPS. I only have a compass in my keychain. If I don’t know what to do, I flip a coin. I definitely don’t choose the easiest way. At the beginning I did use some maps, then I decided to ditch them, I print google maps pages, ask questions, make notes. In the cities everything is a bit more crazy, but asking is my best resource and it is also very fun. For now I have gotten the wrong way many times, I made many friends and I am still alive. As a more mature and experienced biker than me said: “We shouldn’t travel to be seen, we should travel to disappear.” I like not to know where I am. Not being able to communicate with someone for days, helps forget what we think we are and helps find our true selves. I like the silence.

This is not the longest trip, the most organized one, or most anything else for that matter. Stelvio2stelvio is not a race nor a parade with a motorcycle across famous roads or places. It is a journey. An adventure, that day by day, without demands and within the limits of my possibilities, I try to make happen.
