Much has been written about Ed Roth and his contributios to the ‘kustom kulture’*, as it’s been labeled by more recent admirers of that era’s custom vehicle artists and builders. Ed’s motorcycle phase only lasted about five years, but he never stopped constructing trikes. Ed’s involvement with custom cars lasted longer; about ten years. His artistic talent revealed itself when Ed was at high school; after he graduated he joined the air force, then after being discharged he started pinstriping cars.

Ahhh … Ed ‘ Big Daddy ‘ Roth … seriously … who among us ( of a certain age ) didn’t have at least one Rat Fink … or a model kit … or a ‘ Weirdo t-shirt .. or a copy or three of ‘ Choppers Magazine ‘ …etc etc et – al – ad a helluva lotta fun ?
Me ? All of the above .. in fact multiples of .
Now ole Ed himself ? Well … according to those who knew him … a troubled soul on the best of days.. which only got worse as time went on … but damn… his creativity, technical innovation and imagination ? Top notch all the way .
So who’s todays spiritual successor to the creative legacy of ‘ Big Daddy ‘ ?
Just my opinion mind you .. but Ian Roussel … ( Full Custom Garage) hands down .. no contest !!!
😎
I loved the whole Rat Fink, models, custom cars and t-shirts Roth was a part of , now I’m the age he was when he passed. Those were amazing times to live in and I miss them.
Yup .. I’m with you all the way .. including the age thing . Frightening sometimes … aint it .
Oh well … at least we got to participate and enjoy all that was available … more often than not for little more than the cost of time , effort and acquired skill . And unlike todays Suburban Urban Hipster Wanna be’s … everything was bold and new .. rather than just a re-hash of things done a 1000 times over by better and more skilled individuals .
Not to mention our ability to absorb and learn from criticism … rather than run from it hiding under our SnowPlow parents
Which is to say …. we LIVED … wheres todays youth barely exist … just .. and can only pretending to live
So i say .. revel in our past …. understanding it cannot be repeated … but we LIVED it .. and all the pretense and wishful thinking on their part will never equal having actually lived it …
Rock On – Ride On – Learn On ( we ole dogs still have a few new tricks up our sleeves ) Remain Calm ( the whole Ai ‘ break things ‘ BS’s lifespan is short at best ) … and do Carry On … with dignity maturity and aplomb . Cause we did id ( and for the most part invented it ) whereas today … virtual is the one thing they’ll ever know .. unless they come to their senses
Oh … and in the mean time … enjoy some of Ian Roussel’s fine works .. it’ll put a smile on your face guaranteed .. cause there still are a few … that are DOING it
He said it was the Beatles more than anything that killed his bizness.Suddenly all the kids wanted electric guitars and start bands instead of hot rods,t shirts,Revell models, surfer’s crosses, blah blah.Personally I never liked that rat character,I thought it was disgusting.
There was an episode of the Beaver where he wears one of them monster t shirts to school and the teacher doesnt like it,I cant remember how it ended.Wally wouldnt have worn something like that.He was more mature.I dont think even Eddie Haskell would have. That was kids stuff to him.
I agree, not being a monster fan in my youth. But I did like the hot rods of the ’60s, as a very young lad, and even had some of the models; loved it when they came with a Hot Wheels version too, as that was more my jam.
I only discovered Choppers Magazine while researching my book The Chopper: the Real Story, and was impressed that he included all sorts of folks in his mag. Especially after the noxious Easyriders magazine, carrying ads for nazi paraphernalia and white power groups: I spent a day in Mil Blair’s garage scanning slides for my book, and he presented me with his collection of nazi stuff all day long. Yeesh.
Jeeze PdO .. ya means I was way ahead of you on at least one thing M/C related ? Cause damn … I was buying Choppers from the minute it starting hitting my local newsstand
( ahhh … remember the days of .. NewsStands … with rack upon rack of magazines newspapers not to mention an assortment of greeting cards , bubble gum packs paperbacks ( bought my copy of the ” Easy Rider ” film script as well as ” No Commercial Potential ; The Sage of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention ” which s what got me hooked and later an ‘… errr … employee of said Frank Z from Vaugns newsstand ..not to mention more than a couple of models and matchbox cars and motorcycles ) etc etc etc ………
As for the Easyriders magazine . Hell ..
1) Never could stand the rag .. too much T&A and not enough bikes . Its sole redeeming feature was the artwork of David Mann .
2) Obviously you had zero contact with the 1%er biker world back in your youth as I did . . Cause even a close brush would of clued you into their racism and xenophobia .. making it obvious in light of ER’s roots where that rags leaning were
3) Making it for me … a jazz , rock and blues musician who knew from the first time I decided to play guitar ( played sax clarinet and flute before that ) that I would and do owe my entire career etc to Black America .. which still makes my contacts with 1%ers ( old HS friend and back in the day they were he best source for parts ) damn difficult to say the least
But seriously PdO ? WTF ? How could anybody in their right mind of our generation not at least get a kick out of Ed’s Monster and Mr Gasser t’s artwork and model kits . Sheesh … and you called yerself an ART student ? Bit limited I’d say
I mean really … the pinnacle of low brow hot rod outsider art .. and you didn’t like it ?
Damn … oh well … yer loss .. jes don’t spread that around too much … there’s a lot of legends out there that’d have yer head fer that opinion
😎
Bullshit !
1) You have to realize Ed had a bit of a victim complex despite the fact that 90% of his business problems were self inflicted
2) Which means anything he ever said regarding his business .. was more often than not BS
3) The fact is Ed .. despite his prodigious talent .. was a royal pain in the ass to deal with which is what cut his ties with the major manufactures of his product as well as the magazines that featured his work
Which is to say Sparky … the Beatles had nothing … ZERO … NADA to do with Ed’s demise … neither was it trends etc . Fact is if he were still alive and not such a pain in the ass … he’d would still be raking the $$$$$$ in hand over fist
Which is to say … dig into the fact before believing anything anyone .. especially anyone who’s somewhat disturbed .. says
As far as you not liking the RF etc ? Dam son .. what a limited life you’ve led … cause you missed out big time on more fun that should be legal in public
Yeah,it didnt take a genius to figure out that Easyriders didnt like blacks. You would see photos of people wearing White Power t-shirts,etc. mostly in the “In the Wind” photo section of the magazine, which featured photos submitted by readers.I wont forget the one where a woman wore a shirt that said “God created Jap bikes to keep niggers off Harleys”.”Sickle Cell Anemia. The Great White Hope” was another one.
Yeah well … the joke was on them … cause as Sonny Barger has said multiple times ;
” If the Japs had a M/C back then that was over 1000cc ( that is a basic requirement for entry into the HA’s ) we would of all bought Jap bikes … because H-Ds are crap ! “
Ahhh the Rat Fink .. due for a bit of a revival if you ask me … seeing as how a certain someones spray tanned – hair plugged – botoxed face would fit right on a Rat Fink ( _____ Fink ? ) figurine .. with little or no effort .
So come on all you so called ‘ artists ‘ … one of ya’s gotta come up with that on a t-shirt etc
Commit Random Acts of Defiance … cause compliance aint an option
