SUMMARY

"NEW FILM"! - But Open Explorers needs your help!

Josephine and Daniel have just returned after another three years on the road traveling the Americas and Africa! This journey concludes Daniel’s attempt to circumnavigate the world by motorcycle - only making money for the trip along the way!

By contributing to the post-production of our new adventure film you will be helping to bring our story of truth and discovery to the world.

We believe that this film can help restore some faith in humanity. Along with Josephine and Daniel's travels this documentary will offer on-the-ground insight of some of the latest world affairs - such as the European refugee crisis. We hope to repair a few country's reputations as well as correct some misconceptions about various hot-spots we travelled through.

But above all, we would like to make a movie that will be fun for everyone to watch. We invite you to travel with us for an hour and a half to be entertained and maybe even inspired to venture out yourself.

FILM MAKERS

Rodaggio is a film distribution company based in Italy promoting independent, rare and forgotten movies, books and art related to the motorcycle culture. It has been distributing movies such as The Best Bar in America, The Greasy Hands Preachers and Ahora Si Llego! and has been working in close partnership with brands and motorcycle themed events such as Deus, Metzeler-Pirelli, The Motorcycle Film Festival, The Cafe Racer Festival, The Reunion, Tottimotori, the Milano-Taranto commemoration road race and many others. In 2015 and 2016 it created for Metzeler a 48 hours no stop motorcycle themed movies marathon that took place during the Eicma days, in Milan. With the project to bring back to life the 1957 movie “I fidanzati della morte” Rodaggio Film has involved authoritative testimonials from the motorcycle world such as Giacomo Agostini, Melissa Holbrook Pierson, Carlo Ubbiali, Paul d’Orleans, Lorenzo Eroticolor and engaged a community of thousands of motorcyclists from all over the world to support the restoration of the film. The movie is now going to be internationally redistributed in its original version, with subtitles available in English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and Spanish.

SUMMARY

A tale of love, rivalry and passion set in the 50s, in the madcap world of motorcycle speed races, shot on the occasion of the main competitions of that time, such as Monza’s Moto GP and the last edition of the legendary Milano-Taranto race. With also very rare footage of the Moto Guzzi wind tunnel and factories. The film features, alongside popular actors Rik Battaglia and Sylva Koscina, many of the most important champions of those years: Geoffrey Duke, Libero Liberati, Bill Lomas, Enrico Lorenzetti, Reg Armstrong, Stanley Woods, Ken Cavanagh, Dickie Dale, Thomas Campbell, Pierre Monneret, Albino Milani, Walter Zeller, Bruno Francisci, all of them riding amazing Moto Guzzi, Gilera, Mondial and Norton bikes with the so charming and dangerous dustbin fairings that were going to be banned in 1958.

About the restoration:

“I fidanzati della morte” is a movie shot in the motorcycle racing world by Romolo Marcellini, famous for his Oscar nomineé 1960 documentary “The Great Olympics”. The film has been forgotten for nearly 60 years. After its first release in 1957 it literally vanished without leaving a trace, except from some books and articles reminding of it as the “first great motorcycling movie". It took the Rodaggio Film two years to recover the reels and to retrace the film rights history. The restoration started on a positive copy coming from the main italian film archive. After some time the precious original negative, once thought lost in a fire, has been found in laboratory in Rome. Unluckily the film material was partially burned, but most of it was in good condition and has been used as the main reference for the restoration process. The film has been first phisically repaired, then digitally scanned, cleaned frame by frame and color corrected. The sound has been digitally restored and improved as well. All the restoration process has been completed in the world famous Immagine Ritrovata Laboratory, in Bologna.

A movie like no other in its genre, recovered and restored after 60 years from its release thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign with donors from 22 Countries, which bears unique witness to the international motorcycling’s golden age and to an exceptional season of Italian excellence, innovations and challenges in the thrilling world of two wheels.

An award winning director and cinematographer Stephen Marino got his start by filming his friend’s skateboard in their hometown in the suburbs of New York City. He lives and works in New York City as a professional director and filmmaker. Drop him off anywhere with some wheels and a camera and he’s a happy camper.

SUMMARY

Once upon a time, on a cold day in March, a group of men known as the “Crazy Eights” crossed their American borders in search of an even colder climate in the ‘Great White North’.

It was in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada that their icy, snow-covered tires finally came to a halt. A forgotten land that once provided great trade between these two countries during their industrial revolutions—now a vast, almost-wasteland of buildings left behind; lost in time…

That is, until the Crazy Eights laid their eyes and wheels upon it! Once again, this land was looked upon with great hope and promise. Hungry and wild-eyed, they set their appetites for that ever-lingering taste of speed.

Key Cast: "Spade" George Bennett
Director, Producer: Mark MacInnis
Producer, Executive Producer: Wil Thomas
Producer, Executive Producer: James Ken Blackmon
Executive Producer: Brian Awitan
Music, Original Score: Rocco Deluca

FILM MAKERS

Dos Caminos Productions began in the summer of 2015 with its inaugural film, "Sugar & Spade". This passion project about two life-long friends was the catalyst that brought Director/Producer-Mark MacInnis, Producer-James Ken Blackmon, and Producer-Wil Thomas III together. These three being friends themselves, saw this as the perfect opportunity to utilize their diverse collective talents to tell this heart-warming story. With their trajectory set towards shedding light on issues of "social responsibility" and "civil progress", these three creatives are positioned to move forward. As Dos Caminos Productions continues into other projects they plan on keeping the spirit in which they were formed alive.

SUMMARY

A DOCUMENTARY FILM BY DOS CAMINOS

'Spade' George and Austin ‘Brown Sugar’ are two life-long friends, brought together in the late ’60s by their mutual love for powerful custom built motorcycles. From Brooklyn, NY to San Francisco, CA, they’ve been front and center in the fast-paced biker world of guns, girls, gas, and the occasional run-in with the law. Even though they found themselves living on opposite coasts, their deep bond has been constant. These early iconoclasts have given their lives to the unique American chopper culture, with Austin's phenomenal photos and sensational stories to prove it. Each exemplifies in his own way what’s best about these exotic machine builders and their way of life. Being among the first African-American chopper riders in NYC, and inspiring the next generation is only part of the story. Now, they’ll finally be reunited after 30 years in the city where it all began.

* This year is their 50-year anniversary of friendship

STORIES OF BIKE: DREAM (2014)

Run Time: 13:01
Director: Cam Elkins

FILM MAKERS

This whole thing started, as most personal projects start I suppose, out of frustration. Back in 2012, I had just seen two fantastic short films “Solus” by Lossa Engineering and “Chabott Engineering (Shinya Kimura)” by Henrik Hansen and was simultaneously blown away how well these films were made and frustrated that there weren’t more like them.
Soon after, I found the occasional short bike film. But they tended to be much the same. About a builder, working with his hands and why he or she builds and rides the bikes they do. I could never find a video that went further back than that. I wanted to hear their story that got them there. – Cam Elkins

SUMMARY

From the age of 7, when motorbikes enthralled her with their looks, sound and sense of freedom, Jodie made it her dream to surround herself with bikes.

Throughout her life bikes had always been there on the side, until she made the decision to make a career change.

Featuring a custom Suzuki TU250x, this is the story of the pursuit of dreams.

SIT STAY RIDE: THE STORY OF AMERICA'S SIDECAR DOGS (2014)

Run Time: 1:18:00
Directors: Eric Ristau, Geneva Ristau
Writers: Eric Ristau, Geneva Ristau
Key Cast: Joe Baker, Ned Deming, Athena Lonsdale

From  Director Eric Ristau: While shooting a feature-length documentary film about dogs in sidecars, we had not yet realized that we'd soon be connected with an amazing community of people – both on motorcycles and off, but all with a sincere love of dogs, bikes, and adventure. Over 600 people helped successfully fund our first Kickstarter campaign and 'Sit Stay Ride: The Story of America's Sidecar Dogs' was born.

SUMMARY

Across America, there are dogs of all breeds riding in the open air of motorcycle sidecars, whether on short trips around town or extended adventures on the highway. Sit Stay Ride: the Story of America's Sidecar Dogs is a delightful and inspiring documentary film about motorcyclists and their beloved canine co-pilots.

THE BEST BAR IN AMERICA (2009)

Run Time: 1:29:00

Directors: Damon Ristau, Eric W. Ristau
Writers: Damon Ristau, Eric W. Ristau
Key Cast: David Ackroyd, John Ansotegui, Gregory T. Collett

FILM MAKERS

The Ristau brothers say they have always liked bikes, bars, travel, the desert, Wild Turkey, and sleeping on the ground. They decided to write a script about as many of the things that we love as possible and jam them into one movie. That way, if the film completely failed, they would have had a great time making it. We think they succeeded.

motorcycle films inherently speak of adventure, stepping outside the norm, and maybe taking a different perspective on life – all things that relate to actually riding a motorcycle as well. In my experience, motorcyclists have characteristics that most people equate to long-held, traditional American ideals– independence, individualism, self-reliance, bravery in the face of danger, and an adventurous spirit. While these characteristics may be less and less common in the wider modern world, they remain extremely common (perhaps even necessary) traits in a motorcyclist. Films about these people, and their ways of life is about the best topic for a movie that I can imagine.

SUMMARY

An existential ride into the heart of the culture of drink.

A whiskey-fueled writing assignment takes one man on an epic motorcycle road trip through the bars and taverns across the American West. Riding a 1960 BMW R60/2, the journey leads Sanders from the red rock deserts of Arizona and Utah north to the mountains of Montana. With help of fellow traveler and sage, Northway and a variety of other colorful characters along the way, Sanders gets learns the way of the road and the zen of the bar.

DIRTBAG: RETURN OF THE RATTLER (2015)

Run Time: 56:00

FILM MAKERS

Vargas Films is Paolo Asuncion (director, editor) and Rattler Productions is Luis Baptista, Frank Pascual, and Erik Pascual (producers). They have been making moto-centric films and documentaries for almost 10 years. It started with their fascination with motorcycles and the motorcycle culture and the desire to capture the events around them as sort of a video diary – something to watch and look back at when they got older. In many ways, this is still the case as evidenced by their web series – The Handsome Asians Motorcycle Club – where they feature builds, rides, and individuals in the motorcycle community and their stories about life on two wheels.

On a more personal note, there is one reason that Paolo likes to present these films in public. At the beginning of the films, the audience sees a quick montage of a certain person that fades and becomes a logo that says “Vargas Films.” Paolo’s dad was an actor in the Philippines, and his screen name was “Vic Vargas.” Paolo grew up on movie sets but he never really caught the film bug until after his dad passed away. Getting their films screened in theaters is Paolo’s way of putting his dad’s image and his name up on a big screen again. It’s an homage and a thank you, and a way of making Vic Vargas live forever.

SUMMARY

The premise of The Return of the Rattler is simple. Four men decide to participate in the Dirtbag Challenge held annually in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Contestants in the challenge have one month to build a working and rideable chopper for less than $1000. Contestants must then ride the Frankenstein-esque chopper 100 miles without it breaking down. Seems like a simple enough task for seasoned bike builders… But what if one group of contestants had zero experience bike building? What would happen?
The movie is a hilarious look into four inexperienced bike builders as they construct their ‘Rattler’, their custom chopper that started as a beat up Yamaha XS650. Watch as the protagonists cuss, laugh, and argue their way through a unique and fresh learning experience. This movie is not necessarily about the Dirtbag Challenge, but the teamwork and creativity that goes into building a bike.
Dirtbag II features builds from other contestants in the challenge – a Honda CM400 with modified beer bottles for headlamps, a 750 Monster with a girder front end – and encourages viewers to get out there are start creating, regardless of prior experience.

After hanging up his racing helmet and giving the dirt racers away, Chris realised he needed to keep bikes in his life.

And so, began his life as a road rider and the build of his beautiful Tiger hardtail that would also later bring him solace.

SUMMARY

For Jonathan, the undertaking of a solo world trip on a motorcycle was never meant to be conventional.

For his journey he chose the same make and model that his Grandfather rode; a 45 year old Redditch-built Royal Enfield Bullet 350. It may not be the most appropriate or reliable of bikes to take on such a trip. It might break down, it might struggle on some of the terrains it'll cross, it might not be the safest way to travel.

In fact, Jonathan is counting on it so that he might travel a little slower, get to know the people he'll meet on the way a little better and discover some answers that he's been searching for.

SUMMARY

The Black Falcon is the most revered custom motorcycle in recent history. Designed by Ian Barry and built with his crew at Falcon Motorcycles in Los Angeles, the Black Falcon is more than a motorcycle; it’s a collection of ideas filling a motorcycle’s 3 dimensional space, challenging our definitions of both 'art' and 'motorcycle'. It is simply magnificent.
What's never been seen, though, is the remarkable functionality designed into the Black. It can be converted from full-race to touring mode without any tools, via Ian Barry's ingenious designs for adjusting the handlebars, footrests, fuel tanks, seat, forks, and rear subframe.
This film corrects what has not previously been visible; all the hand-made, Ian Barry-designed tricks built in.

SUMMARY

What draws a rational person to devote his life to vintage motorcycles?  This 1930 Neander-JAP, designed by the eccentric German genius Ernst Neumann-Neander, provides a perfect talking point for our love of old machinery. This rare Neander uses a JAP v-twin KTCY engine, a racing motor in its day, full of character and a roar like a beast in the woods of Bavaria.

Partnering with True Motion Pictures (Berlin), The Vintagent spent 2 days in May 2016 making this very first effort in The Vintagent Originals series, mixing sound and speed with images and words; magic!

Eternal thanks to the Hockenheim Museum for the loan of this incredible motorcycle!
