The Vintagent Original: Stories We Need to Tell.

Summer Ride (2017)

Run Time: 1:42
Directed by: David Martinez
Produced by: Motor/Cycle Arts Foundation

FILM MAKERS

For David, photography is both a calculated science and a free verse art form. The controllable variables - the light, the shutter speed, the aperture - are all simply tools to allow the authenticity of a real moment to occur. David captures the beauty and sincerity of these scenes in the pictures he makes. Always at the forefront of technology (but still with a roll of medium format film in his camera bag), David has been shooting high definition video since DSLR technology made it more available. David’ is always ready for an adventure - with his surf bag packed and camera in hand.

SUMMARY

The third of David Martinez' original films for The Vintagent is a mashup of the Wheels+Waves festivals in Biarritz, France, and Cayucos, California.  David finds the common ground of motorcyclists, surfers, skaters, BMX riders from the Atlantic coast of Southern France to the Pacific coast of Southern California.  Without explanation, and no need for one, Martinez seamlessly merges the events, as if time and space were afterthoughts in a continuous stream of Wheels+Waves experiences.  There's no separation between events as the feeling is the same, and the experience of the participants surpasses barriers of language and geography.  'Across the oceans we roll / across the years we ride / changing and constant companions / the sun, our friends, the tide'

Key Cast: Richie Pan

FILM MAKERS

Pete McGill is a Los Angeles based filmmaker, lighting designer, and motorcycle enthusiast. He has set out to share the stories and personalities that shape the motorcycle culture he loves. His daily rider is a Shovelhead swingarm chopper named White Girl.

SUMMARY

Richie 'Pan' Panarra was an artist, motorcyclist, and tattooist, who owned Dark Star Tattoos in Toms River, New Jersey. His art was featured monthly in The Horse magazine, and frequently in other magazines, but his enduring popularity spoke more to his humanity than his prodigious talent. The video series 'Richie Pan’s America' began as collaboration between Pete McGill and the Richie 'Pan' Panarra in April of 2015.  Sadly, after only a few days of shooting, Richie Pan died in a tragic accident.

Using the previously shot footage of Richie (1965-2015), the series was completed as a tribute to him. It contains 15 episodes, the final being 'Richie Pan Forever', a short film that gives a glimpse into who Richie Pan was and his impact on the American arts and motorcycle scene.

SUMMARY

Being a true Scooterist in Indonesia is not about simply owning a Vespa. It’s a life choice, movement and a political expression. This primarily anti-establishment tribe is hard to believe or even describe... picture muslim punk with a bit Mad Max road gypsy.

Scooterists build 10+ meters long vehicles of scrap found on the streets, or at the thousands of small mechanic shops across the Indonesian archipelago.  Sometimes it's hard to  believe these can be be driven, and find what was originally a Vespa scooter underneath. Usually only the iconic Vespa front chassis and 2-stroke engine exposed the Vespa origin - they've been produced in Indonesia under license since 1967 through early 2000.  They offten double as a mobile (or permanent) home.

Most of the riders coming to the IX. Vespa Rendezvous – as the gatherings is called – traveled for days or even weeks to be a part of massive crowd at Pacitan beach, located on the south coast of Central Java. They are thousands of them, and even if many must beg for food or cigarettes, they never miss the chance to offer you their “amunisi” (ammunition) as they call home-distilled palm wine.

Indonesians have a strong inclination towards competition, and their Vespas are great opportunity to show off. There are no rules, but you can win a Vespa drag race, or present your best modification... more wheels is certainly an advantage!

SUMMARY

Fearless bikers on the Wall of Death. Shot in Yogyakarta city, Central Java, Indonesia.

“Accidents here actually can be fatal, and my family wasn’t really happy about what I do but I had no other option where to work so… they get used to it at the end.” Mulyorahadi (29) has been riding since 2002, and recently survived a tire rip during a live show.

To mark the beginning of Javanese New Year citizens of Yogyakarta hold the annual Sekaten – a kind of fun fair and night market open for the first few weeks of November as part of the celebration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. As the sun sinks into the Indian Ocean just beyond the outskirts of the city, the electric lights burst into life.

Almost immediately Sekaten overwhelms your senses with its lights, sounds and smells. The brighter, the louder and the flashier; the better. This simple rule dictates the style of every attraction here and there is nothing louder than the combination of roaring engines and booming beats blasted out of massive sound systems. It is to this sensory assault that the riders of Tong Setan begin to rev their engines. Known in Indonesia as Tong Setan, Roda-Roda Gila or more bluntly “Wall of Death”, the history of this carnival attraction dates back to the beginning of 20th century and remains phenomenally popular today. Built from wood and steel over a period of about 2 days, the barrel like construction stands 7m high, with a top diameter of 6m, a narrower base and a spectator viewing area on the top.

Riders start at the bottom part of barrel and accelerate until centrifugal force allows them to ride horizontally. A top speed of 50km/h sends them spinning round the top of the barrel. As if it wasn‘t risky enough a third rider joins the foray; a cyclist on a fixie. Helmets are tossed aside; riders themselves claim aesthetics matter.

Eko (25) started work at the carnival as an operator and worked his way up to the wall as riders moved to different parts of Indonesia. “It took me about one month to gain needed skill and confidence. After that another 3 months to synchronize with others and smooth things up so I was ready for the show.” He says, lighting up another clove cigarette.

Acrid smoke billows out of their two-stroke engines immediately filling the barrel and the spectator viewing area. 135ccm Yamaha’s RX King seems to be the surest bet amongst riders on the wall, as well as other Indonesian rebels who love to tinker with these machines for the fastest ride in outlawed street drag races.

Stunt men like Eko and Mulyorahadi travel around the whole country to satisfy crowds with up to 7 shows every night. An entrance fee of 8000 Rp (about 75 USD cents) isn’t sufficient income for the riders and so they supplement their income with the tips dangled from the hands of spectators; baiting the riders to ride higher and faster.

The Indonesian archipelago is teeming with over 70 million motorcycles. With this many riders it is the perfect setting to appreciating this engrossing night time spectacle; one that really must be seen to be believed.

He lives in New York when he’s not traveling for Get Lost Magazine and flying drones.

SUMMARY

Director Roberto Serrini takes us inside the celebrated “Wall of Death”, one of the last great American sideshow acts, performed exactly as it was 100 years ago. Antique Indian and Harley Davidson motorcycles ride the vertical wall inside a silo-shaped wooden cylinder, performing feats of daredevil moto-acrobatics and nabbing dollar bills from the hands of stunned viewers at the top.

FILM MAKERS

Rodaggio is a film distribution company based in Italy promoting independent, rare and forgotten movies, books and art related to the motorcycle culture. It has been distributing movies such as The Best Bar in America, The Greasy Hands Preachers and Ahora Si Llego! and has been working in close partnership with brands and motorcycle themed events such as Deus, Metzeler-Pirelli, The Motorcycle Film Festival, The Cafe Racer Festival, The Reunion, Tottimotori, the Milano-Taranto commemoration road race and many others. In 2015 and 2016 it created for Metzeler a 48 hours no stop motorcycle themed movies marathon that took place during the Eicma days, in Milan. With the project to bring back to life the 1957 movie “I fidanzati della morte” Rodaggio Film has involved authoritative testimonials from the motorcycle world such as Giacomo Agostini, Melissa Holbrook Pierson, Carlo Ubbiali, Paul d’Orleans, Lorenzo Eroticolor and engaged a community of thousands of motorcyclists from all over the world to support the restoration of the film. The movie is now going to be internationally redistributed in its original version, with subtitles available in English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and Spanish.

SUMMARY

A tale of love, rivalry and passion set in the 50s, in the madcap world of motorcycle speed races, shot on the occasion of the main competitions of that time, such as Monza’s Moto GP and the last edition of the legendary Milano-Taranto race. With also very rare footage of the Moto Guzzi wind tunnel and factories. The film features, alongside popular actors Rik Battaglia and Sylva Koscina, many of the most important champions of those years: Geoffrey Duke, Libero Liberati, Bill Lomas, Enrico Lorenzetti, Reg Armstrong, Stanley Woods, Ken Cavanagh, Dickie Dale, Thomas Campbell, Pierre Monneret, Albino Milani, Walter Zeller, Bruno Francisci, all of them riding amazing Moto Guzzi, Gilera, Mondial and Norton bikes with the so charming and dangerous dustbin fairings that were going to be banned in 1958.

About the restoration:

“I fidanzati della morte” is a movie shot in the motorcycle racing world by Romolo Marcellini, famous for his Oscar nomineé 1960 documentary “The Great Olympics”. The film has been forgotten for nearly 60 years. After its first release in 1957 it literally vanished without leaving a trace, except from some books and articles reminding of it as the “first great motorcycling movie". It took the Rodaggio Film two years to recover the reels and to retrace the film rights history. The restoration started on a positive copy coming from the main italian film archive. After some time the precious original negative, once thought lost in a fire, has been found in laboratory in Rome. Unluckily the film material was partially burned, but most of it was in good condition and has been used as the main reference for the restoration process. The film has been first phisically repaired, then digitally scanned, cleaned frame by frame and color corrected. The sound has been digitally restored and improved as well. All the restoration process has been completed in the world famous Immagine Ritrovata Laboratory, in Bologna.

A movie like no other in its genre, recovered and restored after 60 years from its release thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign with donors from 22 Countries, which bears unique witness to the international motorcycling’s golden age and to an exceptional season of Italian excellence, innovations and challenges in the thrilling world of two wheels.

SUMMARY

Once upon a time, on a cold day in March, a group of men known as the “Crazy Eights” crossed their American borders in search of an even colder climate in the ‘Great White North’.

It was in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada that their icy, snow-covered tires finally came to a halt. A forgotten land that once provided great trade between these two countries during their industrial revolutions—now a vast, almost-wasteland of buildings left behind; lost in time…

That is, until the Crazy Eights laid their eyes and wheels upon it! Once again, this land was looked upon with great hope and promise. Hungry and wild-eyed, they set their appetites for that ever-lingering taste of speed.

Producer, Executive Producer: James Ken Blackmon
Executive Producer: Brian Awitan
Music, Original Score: Rocco Deluca

FILM MAKERS

Dos Caminos Productions began in the summer of 2015 with its inaugural film, "Sugar & Spade". This passion project about two life-long friends was the catalyst that brought Director/Producer-Mark MacInnis, Producer-James Ken Blackmon, and Producer-Wil Thomas III together. These three being friends themselves, saw this as the perfect opportunity to utilize their diverse collective talents to tell this heart-warming story. With their trajectory set towards shedding light on issues of "social responsibility" and "civil progress", these three creatives are positioned to move forward. As Dos Caminos Productions continues into other projects they plan on keeping the spirit in which they were formed alive.

SUMMARY

A DOCUMENTARY FILM BY DOS CAMINOS

'Spade' George and Austin ‘Brown Sugar’ are two life-long friends, brought together in the late ’60s by their mutual love for powerful custom built motorcycles. From Brooklyn, NY to San Francisco, CA, they’ve been front and center in the fast-paced biker world of guns, girls, gas, and the occasional run-in with the law. Even though they found themselves living on opposite coasts, their deep bond has been constant. These early iconoclasts have given their lives to the unique American chopper culture, with Austin's phenomenal photos and sensational stories to prove it. Each exemplifies in his own way what’s best about these exotic machine builders and their way of life. Being among the first African-American chopper riders in NYC, and inspiring the next generation is only part of the story. Now, they’ll finally be reunited after 30 years in the city where it all began.

* This year is their 50-year anniversary of friendship

STORIES OF BIKE: DREAM (2014)

Run Time: 13:01
Director: Cam Elkins

FILM MAKERS

This whole thing started, as most personal projects start I suppose, out of frustration. Back in 2012, I had just seen two fantastic short films “Solus” by Lossa Engineering and “Chabott Engineering (Shinya Kimura)” by Henrik Hansen and was simultaneously blown away how well these films were made and frustrated that there weren’t more like them.
Soon after, I found the occasional short bike film. But they tended to be much the same. About a builder, working with his hands and why he or she builds and rides the bikes they do. I could never find a video that went further back than that. I wanted to hear their story that got them there. – Cam Elkins
