The Hazards Of Helen: Episode #26, The Wild Engine (1915)

Run Time: 13:40
Producer: Kalem Company
Director: J.P. McGowan
Key Cast: Helen Holmes

FILM MAKERS

J.P. McGowan was born on February 24, 1880 in Terowie, South Australia as John Paterson McGowan. He was a director and actor, known for The Hurricane Express(1932), The Hazards of Helen (1914) and Hills of Missing Men (1922). He was married to Katherine Evangeline and Helen Holmes. He died on March 26, 1952 in Hollywood, California, USA.

SUMMARY

The spunky Helen (Helen Holmes) is our hero as a telegraph operator at a remote location along a railroad. Informed of the danger of an engine run wild on the same track as an approaching excursion train, Helen mounts a motorcycle and speeds down the track to warn the passengers of their imminent peril. Nearing a river trestle under repair, she hurtles into the water; undaunted, she swims to the opposite bank and flags down the excursion train in the nick of time.

The Wild Engine is episode #26 in the American film serial The Hazards Of Helen based on a novel by John Russell Corvell and the play by Denman Thompson. The series was adapted to the silent screen by W. Scott Darling, and a total of 119 episodes were produced between 1914 and 1917 by the Kalem Company. At 23.8 hours it is the longest of the film series format.

Episodes 1-48 were directed by J.P. McGowan and starred Helen Holmes, while the remainder were directed by James Davis and starred in by Helen Gibson. Unlike the cliffhanger serials of the era, The Hazards of Helen is actually a film series made up of near autonomous single reel twelve-minute melodramas.

Both Helen Holmes and Helen Gibson (who changed her first name to suit the role) performed their own stunts, and are recognized as revolutionizing the industry.

The Vintagent Classics: The films that inspired us.

Impatience (1928)

Run Time: 36:57
Director: Charles Dekeukeleire
Cast: Yonnie Selma
Music: Amatorski

FILM MAKERS

Charles Dekeukeleire (27 February 1905 - 2 June 1971) was a Belgian film director . He pioneered modern Belgian film with Henri Storck . He was inspired by French avant-garde cinema, particularly the works of Germaine Dulac.

SUMMARY

'Impatience' (1928) is the first film to eroticize the motorcycle.  Other films of the Silent Era relied on motorcycles for their kinetic energy, but none made an explicit connection between a moving, vibrating motorcycle and a woman's nude body, a landscape, a woman rider, and even swaying abstract shapes!  'Impatience' is the pioneering film of Charles Dekeukeliere, a Belgian artist, whose work fits into the great artistic movements of the era - Futurism, Dada, and Suprematism.

Charles Dekeukeleire sought to create  a pure cinematic experience, without a narrative.  'Impatience' has four characters - the motorcycle, the woman, the mountain, and abstract shapes, with the woman played by Yonnie Selma.  With no story, 'Impatience' is visual poetry.  The impact of this rarely-seen film can only be guessed at - did director Jack Cardiff know of it before he directed 'Girl on a Motorcycle' in 1968?  The parallels are striking, and some scenes are nearly identical - 'Impatience' clearly set the pattern for sexualizing the motorcycle, and relating the machine to a woman's body, with the possibility of an erotic bond between them.

RIDERS: MARIA (2017)

Run Time: 2:43
Producer: DJI
Director: Yehonatan Richter-Levin
Creative Director: Ferdinand Wolf
Colorist: Stephen Nakamura

FILM MAKERS

Produced by DJI and a new state-of-the-art camera was used and tested to shoot in a drone with high quality cinematic look.
It was directed by Yehonatan Richter-Levin. Yehonatan was born in Tel-Aviv in 1980. He came to Berlin in 2002 and worked as a photographer and video artist. He studied at the art and design academy until completing his diploma in visual communications with focus on writing  and directing films. In 2012 he made his first steps as a freelance director after shooting 16 video clips for the legendary German band “Die Ärzte” and since then worked for clients like Porsche, Tesla, Zeiss, Nescafe, Jaguar, Samsung and Good-Year.

SUMMARY

'Riders' is not about freedom, speed, or adventure. It expresses the simple and raw essence of riding a machine. Through dust and stones, this movie takes Maria motorcycles to Portuguese wild tracks, cliffs and city streets.

As custom motorcycle builders, for whom identity and rebellion are always central issues, Maria Riding Company wanted to imprint riding character at the core of the movie. It was used 3 very different motorcycles in the shooting: "The Orbiter" - a brand new Yamaha XSR700, made for Yamaha "Yard Built", The "Black Baron" - a 2005 Triumph Bonneville and the "Dirty Geisha" - a Yamaha XT600 from the nineties. Much like Punk-Rock that is based on a DIY attitude, bespoke motorbike culture is essentially about self-expression.
"We design, we build, we ride."

The Vintagent Original: Stories We Need to Tell.

Summer Ride (2017)

Run Time: 1:42
Directed by: David Martinez
Produced by: Motor/Cycle Arts Foundation

FILM MAKERS

For David, photography is both a calculated science and a free verse art form. The controllable variables - the light, the shutter speed, the aperture - are all simply tools to allow the authenticity of a real moment to occur. David captures the beauty and sincerity of these scenes in the pictures he makes. Always at the forefront of technology (but still with a roll of medium format film in his camera bag), David has been shooting high definition video since DSLR technology made it more available. David’ is always ready for an adventure - with his surf bag packed and camera in hand.

SUMMARY

The third of David Martinez' original films for The Vintagent is a mashup of the Wheels+Waves festivals in Biarritz, France, and Cayucos, California.  David finds the common ground of motorcyclists, surfers, skaters, BMX riders from the Atlantic coast of Southern France to the Pacific coast of Southern California.  Without explanation, and no need for one, Martinez seamlessly merges the events, as if time and space were afterthoughts in a continuous stream of Wheels+Waves experiences.  There's no separation between events as the feeling is the same, and the experience of the participants surpasses barriers of language and geography.  'Across the oceans we roll / across the years we ride / changing and constant companions / the sun, our friends, the tide'

Using the previously shot footage of Richie (1965-2015), the series was completed as a tribute to him. It contains 15 episodes, the final being 'Richie Pan Forever', a short film that gives a glimpse into who Richie Pan was and his impact on the American arts and motorcycle scene.

THE SCOOTERIST (2014)

Run Time: 4:12
Film, Photography & Text: Vít Hašek

FILM MAKERS

Vít Hašek is the founder of 3heads production, an open creative collective.

SUMMARY

Being a true Scooterist in Indonesia is not about simply owning a Vespa. It’s a life choice, movement and a political expression. This primarily anti-establishment tribe is hard to believe or even describe... picture muslim punk with a bit Mad Max road gypsy.

Scooterists build 10+ meters long vehicles of scrap found on the streets, or at the thousands of small mechanic shops across the Indonesian archipelago.  Sometimes it's hard to  believe these can be be driven, and find what was originally a Vespa scooter underneath. Usually only the iconic Vespa front chassis and 2-stroke engine exposed the Vespa origin - they've been produced in Indonesia under license since 1967 through early 2000.  They offten double as a mobile (or permanent) home.

Most of the riders coming to the IX. Vespa Rendezvous – as the gatherings is called – traveled for days or even weeks to be a part of massive crowd at Pacitan beach, located on the south coast of Central Java. They are thousands of them, and even if many must beg for food or cigarettes, they never miss the chance to offer you their “amunisi” (ammunition) as they call home-distilled palm wine.

Indonesians have a strong inclination towards competition, and their Vespas are great opportunity to show off. There are no rules, but you can win a Vespa drag race, or present your best modification... more wheels is certainly an advantage!
